Ayurveda Therapies
"Ayusho vedah Ayurvedah (आयुषो वेदः आयुर्वेद: 1) is fundamentally understood as the Science of Life. This ancient practice not only provides a comprehensive understanding of various diseases and their effective management strategies but also offers insights into maintaining the health and well-being of a healthy individual. The emphasis is not solely on medications; it encompasses a wide range of approaches, including specific procedures, external applications, and internal treatment protocols such as Panchakarma, along with many other therapeutic procedures.
Panchakarma consists of five essential treatment protocols, which are as follows: Vamana (Emesis), Virechana (Purgation), Basti (Enema), Nasya (Nasal administration of medicinal drops), and Raktamokshana (Blood letting). Additionally, there are numerous other beneficial procedures like Abhyanga, an Ayurvedic massage utilizing medicated oil to relieve body aches and enhance circulation. Other notable practices include Eweda (Sudations), Avagaha Sweda (Sitz bath), and Pottali Sweda or Pinda Sweda (a poultice filled with beneficial medicinal leaves). You will also find advanced techniques such as Shirodhara (the application of liquid on the forehead in a gentle, oscillatory manner), Pizhichil or Kayaseka (whereliquid is poured over the entire body), Takradhara (the use of buttermilk on the body, particularly for addressing skin issues), and various basti procedures targeting specific areas of the body.
Other specific treatment methods include Akshi Tarpana (nourishing the eyes), Karna Poorana (ear treatment), Kavala Graha (mouth rinsing with medicated liquids), and Gandusha (holding medicated liquid in the mouth). Regional basti treatments such as Griva Basti, Kati Basti, and Janu Basti are employed to address localized issues. Finally, techniques like Yoni Piche, Lepa (application of medicinal paste), Thalepothichil, Dhumapana (inhalation of medicated fumes), Agnikama, and Jalauka Avacharana (leech therapy) play an important role in holistic healing.
It is always advisable to consult with your Ayurveda physician in order to determine which of these procedures would be most beneficial based on your individual health requirements. Dr. A P Shrilata BAMS, MD, YIC, PGDND
