Numbers Don’t Lie — Growing Awareness of Ayurveda should have increased Ayurvedic Coverage, Did it?

The Income Tax Return Statistics from the Income Tax Department indicate a notable decline in the total number of taxpayers under the Ayurvedic Code 18012 for the assessment years 2020-2021 through 2023-2024. This decrease may suggest a need for deeper analysis into the Ayurveda sector's economic activity, compliance levels, and potential shifts in practice dynamics.

Factors influencing this trend could include the impact of recent health trends, challenges in visibility or marketing for Ayurvedic practitioners, or potential regulatory changes affecting the practice. Additionally, an increased awareness of alternative health and wellness therapies may play a role in attracting a broader patient base.

To reverse this trend, practitioners may benefit from collaborative efforts such as enhanced community outreach, educational initiatives demonstrating the value of Ayurvedic practices, and possibly leveraging modern technology to connect with patients. Furthermore, integrating traditional practices with contemporary modalities could attract new clients while encouraging existing ones to remain engaged.

Ultimately, addressing this decline requires a balanced approach that honors the rich heritage of Ayurveda while adapting to the evolving landscape of healthcare and consumer preferences.

Some Ayurvedic Aggregators are of the opinion that the fight is not between Ayurveda and Ayurveda v/s Others be it Unani, Homeopathy all are showing reduced numbers but due to Corporates aggregating multiple brands under them.

Future shall tell us If Ayurveda Industry in India shapes to this Number tale and growing Negative Number of Registered Tax payers is an area which need to be looked by Ministry of Health and AYUSH Team leaders advising the Ministry.
